Most welding wires with the only exception of zinc-coated wires tend to rust easily when they are exposed to the atmosphere. Most vulnerable are iron welding wires, steel welding wires and carbon welding wires. On their own these welding wires generally rust easily, except the steel wires which can still be twisted into various combinations and shapes to protect it from rusting due to its strength and elasticity. Especially vulnerable is carbon welding wires and iron wires which are highly corrosive when exposed to air. To prevent Zinc welding wires, a second layer of zinc is used on top of the other metal welding wires because zinc is not easily rusted and even if it does, the underlying layers are not harmed. Zinc reacts with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere naturally, although it can and is done industrially as well, to form zinc carbonate. Zinc carbonate is an especially hard layer that does not allow the moisture to enter or pass through, thus making the zinc even more strong.
This highly pure welding wire which is electroplated also gives it higher machining speed in general depending on the kind of electroplating technology used. The second thing to see is whether the wire surface is coated with zinc uniformly or not. When it is uniformly coated it gives good and standard discharge features. It is what makes it possible to create a fine sublime discharge. This is not something you will find in general metal welding wires.
